i would not like to categories this story of any topic or subject...let it evolve through the story itself. This story will appear in parts every day during this week. Very special reason for this.

Diary of a ... - Ajita Vishwas

As the car raced ahead, I settled and caressed this diary.

August 1975

“Madhuri! Madhuri!! Get up beta! What’s wrong with you?”

“I don’t feel like, Ma!”

“What happened? It is only yesterday that you won a prize for your story! Are you feeling tired today? Everybody at school would want to congratulate today!”

“...”

“Why are you staring like this? This girl! Uff! Again lost in her own world! Come out into the real world, beta!”

I could hear Papa’s voice as if coming from a distance. Telling Ma to leave me alone; that I am creative and so should not be shackled like my other siblings and that I should be left alone.

Papa! How I love him! Amongst all of us siblings, he adores me the most and I love him the most. Probably he is the only one to understand me, though he is hardly of those talkative, emotive types.

The daughters after 4 sons, I and Mayuri were the apple of eyes of my father. Though our names sounded rhythmically similar to suit twins, my parents must have had given a real thought because they mean as different as me and Mayuri. She is beautiful! I wish I was 1/10th as her. No, I am not jealous. Quite proud in fact. Her name suits her. Beautiful as a peacock! And she dances as well. That is one thing I could never bring myself to do. I am happy for her. I love to see her dance. I can do that for hours.

“Madhuuuuu...”

There goes Ma! Can’t see Mayu around. Has she already left for school? I will have to catch up with her. I don’t like to walk alone to school.

*****

“Uff! This girl! What has gotten into her! Eating half her breakfast! Now she runs off as if she is chasing a hurricane!”
